  • The Big surprise.......

"Well, y'all I want yall to keep June 8th open and free because I want to spend the day with yall" these were the words I told my family back in February  to make them think that was the day I was to arrive in VA ( I didn't tell them that was WHEN I was coming home, I just said, "Keep it open" .

I had told Dad that I wanted to surprise Hannah for Graduation and told him not to tell the other family that I would be coming home early. I said that I wanted his advise on what day would be a good day for him to pick me up at the airport? He told me "Maybe two days before Hannah's graduation would be good, just incase you run into flight problems".  Well,,,, Little did my dad know, that the joke was also going to be on him.

I booked my flight for May 15th, (which happened to be the week of the earthquake). I did have some delays in Chengdu because of the earthquake, which made me miss my international flight to USA. I arrived in Dulles Friday night at 11:30. Parla, Andrea and Amber were all at the airport to pick me up. During the long 2 hr. drive to Bridegwater, we all discussed HOW we were going to surprise my family. We all spent the night at Andrea and Seth's place, instead of driving to my place in the wee hours of the morning.

The next morning (Saturday) we would driver over to my place. I woke up at 7:00 Sat. morning (not feeling any jetlag,,maybe from all the excitement). Parla called up dad and asked if Her, Amber, Andrea, and Seth (Andrea's Husband) could come over and see the new house..Andrea and Amber had never seen it. Luckily, Parla had caught dad right before he left the house. Parla mentioned that they would bring doughnuts and orange juice over for breakfast.

We we got to the house, all 4 of them went inside while i stayed out in the vehicle. Five minutes later, Amber text me on Andrea's phone and said "We're in the living room, come on in".  I crept through the garage and slowly opened the door and walked in. I was watching Dad's face.. he gasped for air and just stood speechless for a couple seconds.... Mom was  standing somewhere where I couldn't see her, but then we all started laughing and cryin ha ha OH WHAT JOY!!!!!!!!!! ( if you ever have the opportunity to surprise family... i highly recommend it!). Dad swept me off my feet twirling me in circles,, and then said " You lil squirt you!".  What was so funny, Dad was listening to a CD i made for my family that had my piano playing and singing on it. When the girls and Seth came in, he said, " I was just listening to Sheri's CD, wouldn't that be so awesome if she could be playing this LIVE for us?".... then i came walkin in the door ah ha ha

    IMG_0008
^Dad boxing my ears for surprising him and also paying me back for the April Fool's prank I played on him :)

Mom and dad were the only ones up at 7:30 Sat. morning, Hannah and Caleb were still in Bed, Josh and Ryan were w/ friends.
I hid behind the couch while Mom went and woke Hannah up. When Hannah came out, everybody was talking about this and that. Dad said... "Hannah, Amber and them came in the door while i was listening to Sheri's CD, and just told them,,'Man wouldn't that be awesome if Sheri was playing that music for us right now?' " Hannah laughed, and they continued talking, at that time i stood up and hunched my arms over the couch,, she didn't see me right away... a couple seconds later she spotted me and  HER JAW HIT THE FLOOR. It's indescribable of the emotion that floods your heart when you experience something like that,, we both were in tears!   She said "why are you hear..? right away I said.. 'HAPPY GRADUATION',, She laughed and was still bewildered.

Caleb was still sleeping, even through all the loud commotion that was going on out in the living room, so i decided to go wake him up.. I tip-toed into his bedroom, snuck up to his face and he SHOT UP and scared me,,, thinking i was one of his guy buddies ha ha ha,, then when he realized it was his sister from China,, he shouted "SHERI?!"
Ryan, didn't come home until late that afternoon. I was unpacking in my room when i went rushing out into the kitchen, remembering i had some eggs boiling on the stove. Soon as i got to the kitchen i saw RYAN, with his back toward me,, i stopped and just stood there,, he turned around to see who made such an errrrrch STOP, he looked at me and it took about 3 -4 seconds for it to sink in that it was me, then he SHOUTED.... "SHERI........What???   ha ha he ran over to me and gave me a big ole brotherly bear hug
Josh was in Washington DC at an air show, he didn't come home till 11:00  that night,, I was really tired by that point and thought maybe i might go on to bed and surprise him in the morning... but just as I was heading off to bed he came in the door. I hid behind the fireplace for a while till he came into the kitchen, Him, Mom and my other cousin were talkin and then I slowly walked out,,, he was flossing his teeth during this time and when he saw me, he paused and like all the others said..."SHHHHEEEERRRRI?!" i told him that he looked so tall,, he said "i haven't grown an inch,,, you just got shorter"
Good thing is i got all these surprises, on video, including my grandmother's reaction!!!

  • China Earthquake.....

    12-05-08_2053

Yes, I was part of the BIG shake that went on in China. Chengdu is located 50 or so miles south of Wenchuan (the Epicenter).

I had just got done teaching the children and had to go to the supermarket for grocheries.  2:30pm I was on the 2nd floor of TrustMart, basket of grocheries in hand.... started going down the escalator when all of a sudden i heard rumbling and screaming,, i didn't feel anything because I was moving down toward the 1st floor. I looked around only to see a RUSH of Chinese people screaming and running straight toward me, i started to pick up my pace a lil and looked up.... there was a escalator casing that was going up to the 3rd floor,, it was swaying and shaking. My first thought was "we got hit by a plane or we are being bombed" I RAN down the escalator (grocheries still in hand) trying to make my way to the exit door,, ran past the checkout counter, then realizing i should just DROP my basket and run faster. As i was running I looked up to the ceiling, I thought the roof was going to cave in any second.. everything was still shaking and I could hear stuff crashing to the floor. The electricty then went out,,,by that time I was almost to the exit. There was enough "outside" light shining in that we  could see where we were going. I finally made it out in the open, I looked up top of the building to see what hit it,, there was nothing in sight, but I saw the buildig sway,,, i looked around and all the other buildings were swaying and the glass was trimbling... i finally realized then that we were having an earthquake. The ground was still shaking.  I tried to make my way through the crowd and head back to Geoff and Becki's. Hundreds of Chinese peole were crowding in the middle of the streets (the only somewhat safe place from the apartment buildings all around). It was somewhat funny to see some of the garb the people were wearing,,, some in their PJ's, chefs that came from the kitchen, and ladies that just came out of a spa treatment w/ their faces caked w/ cucumber lotion.

I made it to Geoffs and was so releived to see that they had made it down from their 7th floor apartment building. The kids were were anxious to see me and so eager to tell me THEIR SOTRY of what happened. After the BIG quake, we experience many more tremors small and large that kept our nerves on edge!

^ A Big crack running up the middle where two apartment buildings were joined.

    IMG_0042

The college campus (real close to where I lived) was packed w/ people. Many people put up tents, laid out blankets and slept here for the night. It was another area that was open and away from tall buildings.

^Don't even think about having  "personal space"

    IMG_0068

The night of the earthquake we all decided to sleep out on the soccer field, a lot of the campus yards were all taken. This picture ^ was taken the next morning (there were lots more people than that,, sleeping out there on that field).  During the night around 3-4:00 we felt another BIG tremor- I never knew the ground could shake like that!

Around 5:00 that morning it started to sprinkle and then rain. We decided to go back to our apartments and trust that we would be ok. I thought I wasn't going to get any sleep in my 3rd floor apartment,, but I did.... I did feel tremors off and on,,,, it made my heart sink to my stomach, I held still for a while and asked myself,,, should I wake up Bev ( my roommate) and dash down stairs toward teh street? I waited it out and managed to fall into a deep sleep, which Lord knows I needed it!

^ The next morning after the earthquake

During the whole time, we heard that the earthquake started in Wenchuan, where Chad, Jenny and Matthew Graber lived. We hadn't heard from them untill about 3-4days after the quake. What JOY filled our souls when we found out that they were safe and found!

    IMG_0072

^ Through all the panic and greif, there were still smiles of hope.

These next pictures I had taken from my two visits up in Wenchuan. Every time I look through them I have to wonder... "how many of these people are still alive".

^Like we did, many took refuge on the soccer field that was on the college campus in Wenchuan.

He's still God in the valley

I'm thankful to God for his grace and mercy for sparing me and my friend through that horrible quake, but thousands are dead and still missing, why did he spare me and not them? I may never understand, but God is good and his love endures forever!!

To those who don't know, I'm back home in VIRGINIA. THe earthquake was NOT what brought me home. I had intentions on flying home May 15th to surprise my family and particularly my sister HANNAH for graduation. I must say- I gave them along with many others quite a SHOCK!!

I had mixed feelings about coming home. It felt as if i was leaving all the bad behind me. I'm so greatful that I'm with my family right now!! I never knew how the distance really made my heart grow fonder for my awesome family!!!!

    Y'all come back now y'hear!!!

I'll post more pics later of the surprise
